Morning Coffee

Feb 22,2018

Matthew 6:1 (KJV)
1  Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

Why do we do the things we do? What is our motivation? Why good works? Jesus says in Math 5:16 to let our light shine before men. So why does He now say to not do your alms before men? It goes back to motivation. Why do we do good works? In 5:16 it is to glorify our Father which is in heaven. Here it is to be seen of men. He uses the term “hypocrites”. I heard it said that a hypocrite is someone who is not himself on Sunday.

Sometimes people give to God for reasons that are less than pure, maybe to seem important in the eyes of others, maybe to gain power by giving money as leverage to control. It is a blessing to be a part with those who give abundantly, regularly and quietly.

Don’t publicly announce your gifts, no press conference. Let your children see you give, and teach them why. They may follow your habit, but not your conviction if you don’t. Parents lead the way.

You can be like a pharisee who wonders why people don’t give as much as you or a hypocrite who complains about the giving of others but doesn’t give himself. You receive no reward from God. You can be one who gives quietly and regularly, and receive blessing from your Father in heaven. God always supplies all that we need to accomplish all he has called us to do. We must listen, be obedient and trust that He knows more than we do.  We are blessed.

Pastor, we are enjoying Morning Coffee. Thank you for doing this. You’re keeping us on the straight and narrow path with the truths of the scripture. God bless you.
